Looking Glass Arts Presents An Evening of Music by 'For Living Lovers' at Panther Creek Arts

Join us at The Hall on Saturday, September 14th at 7pm for a evening of music presented by our neighbors at Looking Glass Arts. This event is made possible by the generous support The Cheswatyr Foundation.

For Living Lovers is a duo from NYC. Brandon Ross (acoustic guitar, soprano guitar, banjo) and Stomu Takeishi (acoustic bass guitar) play creative music; the vocabulary is personal, adventurous, intimate and captivating. Bring your attention, your openness and your Iinner ears along with you.

Brandon Ross is a performing and recording artist, guitarist and composer who has worked and collaborated with many innovative voices in modern music including Henry Threadgill, Wadada Leo Smith, Cassandra Wilson, Jewel, Tony Williams, Lizz Wright, Arto Lindsay, The Lounge Lizards, Leroy Jenkins, Oliver Lake, Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris, Bill Frisell, Me’Shell N’degeocello, Arrested Development, Archie Shepp, Muhal Richard Abrams, Don Byron, Ron Miles and many others.

Stomu Takeishi is a Japanese experimental and jazz bassist. He is known for playing fretless five-string electric bass guitar and a Klein five-string acoustic bass guitar, often using extended techniques and electronic manipulations such as looping. In the 1990s, he began to achieve prominence as an innovative New York jazz bass player, and critics have noted both his adventurous playing and sensitivity to sound and timbre. He has performed and/or recorded with Don Cherry, Henry Threadgill, Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Butch Morris, Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Paul Motian, Myra Melford, Cuong Vu, Badal Roy, David Tronzo, Erik Friedlander, Satoko Fujii, Laszlo Gardony, Ahmad Mansour, Andy Laster, Ned Rothenberg, and with Molé, a trio with Hernan Hecht and Mark Aanderud.

"Ross is a one-man atmosphere factory, availing himself of all the sounds—cries, squeaks, cracks, fuzz, whispers, organ-like echoes—that an electric guitar, in the hands of a master, can produce." –  Paris Review

Stop Motion Animation Workshop with Andy Gaukel

In this engaging workshop kids, adults, and their families learn through hands-on creation, demonstrations, and behind-the-scenes footage, how the same methods that studios employ on large-scale films can be used to create stop motion animation at home. This is a one-of-a-kind workshop with artist/educator, Andy Gaukel, whose work has been presented throughout Germany, France, Montreal, and the US. Up to 15 people are offered the opportunity to work with this master artist with a culminating performance at the end of the day, which will be open and free to the public. If you cannot be in the workshop be sure to come to the culminating presentation at the end of the day.

Andy Gaukel is a Hudson Valley, NY based theatre and puppetry artist and educator whose work has been presented throughout the world including Le Mouffetard in Paris, France; Casteliers (Montreal); Blickwechsel in Magdeburg, Germany; the Chicago International Puppet Theatre Festival, among others. Andy’s puppetry education company, Atomic Arts,  is proud to be serving the students and teachers of several CUNY early childhood centers including Bronx Community College, LaGuardia Community College, City Tech and Lehman College. Andy is also proud to bring puppetry programs to Imagine Learning Centers across the five boroughs and New Jersey. Andy is the proud recipient of five Jim Henson Foundation grants to help further his original work.

“Andy Gaukel created quite an astonishing show…The result is powerfully evocative, poetic and very moving. We gradually forget the puppets and let ourselves get swept away by the emotion of the story. Amazing.”

- COUP DE THÉÀTRE, Paris

“With Schweinehund…Andy Gaukel and Myriame Larose offer a real lesson in puppetry.”

- (MON)theatre, Montreal

VKB Band

VickiKristinaBarcelona is Rachelle Garniez, Amanda Homi and Mamie Minch, a power trio of music veterans dedicated to re-imagining the songs of Tom Waits via inventive three-part harmonies and a treasure trove of instruments including banjos, bottles, squeezebox and zills.  They create a world of sound at once powerful, playful and poignant.

Seasoned singers and songwriters, each a hybrid story-teller and multi-instrumentalist in her own right, join forces to salute the tragicomic lyrical genius of the Waits songbook. Picture the Triplets of Belleville disguised as Depression Era hobos riding the rails across America stopping to play dance parties and funerals along the road to nowhere.

Three distinct styles form a captivating original mix, greater than the sum of its' parts, never failing to amaze and delight audiences of all stripes.

MACIEJ ŻÓŁTOWSKI, conductor

Program: B. MARTINU Nonet No. 2, L. SPOHR Grand Nonet for Winds & Strings, op. 31, D. BRUCE Steampunk

ABOUT THE EVENT: David Bruce, a modern-day Master, has ingeniously crafted compositions that embody the essence of a Victorian-inspired, steam-powered universe. With an ingenious fusion of classical sophistication and avant-garde ingenuity, Bruce’s works capture the very essence of this alternate reality. Be prepared to be swept away by the haunting melodies, pulsating rhythms, and breathtaking orchestrations that are guaranteed to leave you awe-inspired. In the Nonet No. 2, Bohuslav Martinu’s vivid imagination takes flight, guiding you through a soundscape that pulsates with the energy of progress. Compositions by Louis Spohr, like the turning gears of a steam engine, exude a sense of purpose and urgency that captivates the listener from start to finish.

Trumpet and Accordion ! Eric Vloeimans & Will Holshouser

Eric Vloeimans & Will Holshouser

An adventurous trumpet and accordion duo, Eric and Will play evocative original compositions that bring together sounds from jazz, classical and folk music: rich harmonies, catchy melodies, and energetic improvising span the range from emotional to fun. These these two virtuoso musicians use the intimacy of the duo setting to full effect, taking listeners on a journey through a variety of musical landscapes. Along the way, the trumpet and accordion point to a variety of cultural influences, distilled by these two composer/improvisers into a thrilling set of music.

Trumpeter Eric Vloeimans is one of the best-known musicians in the Netherlands, having won six Edison awards (the “Dutch Grammy”) for his recordings. He is in constant demand as a bandleader and guest soloist and has appeared all over the world with groups ranging from the Mercer Ellington Orchestra to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, as well as his own bands.Recently, he was invited by the king of the Netherlands to play a concert for a state visit to the Czech Republic. Will Holshouser is a veteran of the New York music scene and is one of the most widely respected accordionists in the US. He has toured and recorded with many artists including Regina Carter, David Krakauer, and Antony & the Johnsons. Three albums of his own music have been released by the Portuguese label Clean Feed. The duo recorded their first album, Eric & Will, in the US in 2017. After a pandemic pause, their latest album Two for the Road (V-flow/Challenge Jazz) was recorded live on tour in the Netherlands in 2021. In 2022, they toured to thirteen cities in the U.S.

“An accordion and a trumpet. They brought a sold-out house . . . to ecstasy.”

- Rinus Van Der Heijden, JazzNu (Netherlands)

“Unforgettably unclassifiable ... expressive and uncategorizable chamber music in a jazz setting.” - Mel Minter, Musically Speaking blog (USA)

“With its beauty and eclectic influences ... a CD release from their 2021 concert tour in the Netherlands is a “must” purchase.” * * * * *

- Jeff Krow, Audiophile Audition (USA)

Please support our sponsors for this event; we would not be here without them. Find them, chat with them, buy their goods, and come back again.

Joan and Tom Brooks rock! Thank you for your major donation to this evening. Go check out their incredible store.

Susan Henry: Even though she doesn’t live here now she still donates. We love her; go give her a hug and tell her to come back home.

Rebecca and Richard Bell. They come to every event they can at the hall, and always say, “how can we help?” Rebecca makes us soup when we’ve had it with cooking. They are awesome.

Shannon and family are early to-bed-people but it doesn’t stop them from offering up help whenever we ask. Go eat their food and buy from their market. Love them all.

ML Geiger is our next door neighbor and lighting designer. In her spare time she weaves, knits, and offers up help whenever we ask. What a place West Fulton is to have the likes of her!

Sylvia Buccelli is an absolute dream of a pianist and long time colleague. Even though she is in Berlin for this concert she offered up a donation to make this night happen. If you find her give her a hug.

Ellen and J.Ed are actors and teachers with long careers in the theater and luckily ended up as neighbors. When we carol in WF at Christmas time they pull out the stops and put on a feast by the fire. If you’re lucky you’ll find them for a chat.

Linda LaViolette just isn’t in WF enough and we can’t get enough of her. She breezes in, drops idea bombs for terrific events, and then she’s off to other parts of the world. Linda, come back !

Joe Garry always takes an interest in whatever is going on here at the hall. He and his late husband, Barry, religiously attended the turkey suppers here where they have, “turkey supper friends; of course we’ll be there!” Give him a hug for us.

Bassoons! 4 of them!

NorthWinds

Bassoon Ensemble

A gaggle of geese, a school of fish, a murder of crows -- a monsoon of bassoons?

The bassoonists of NorthWinds have found a cheerful and spirited platform for this unsung bass wind pipe. The ensemble was formed in 2017 with the idea that all music is created equal -- except in a bassoon ensemble, which is more equal than others.  These players bring out the jaunty, the moody, the serene, and the serious nature of the instrument with an easygoing and open style. The enthusiasm is infectious as the group performs and chats with the audience. What’s a double reed?  You “crow” a reed?  Wait, it’s eight feet long?  Is a contrabassoon really eighteen feet long? Hold on -- is that an accordion up there?  You might just get lucky with this group and hear something completely unexpected.

As for credentials: the group has one PhD, five graduate degrees, and years of study with prestigious musicians, including NY Phil players. One of us has even left behind a distinguished career as an oboist and has come to see the light as a bassoonist.  Between the group we have toured Europe, performed solos with major orchestras, been part of Grammy nominated ensembles, and of course, trekked through the work-a-day world of the freelance musician. What’s really needed is a bit more fun now; and here it is.

NorthWinds Ensemble is especially well suited to intimate settings like THE HALL at Panther Creek Arts where the audience and performers have a moment to exchange thoughts and listen to this lesser known beauty of the orchestral winds.

Lost Schoharie County prints

Lost Schoharie County prints

Renown photographers, Susan Daley and Steve Gross present “Lost Schoharie County” prints. Bring a part of the past home with home; these prints are for sale and a portion of each sale goes to Panther Creek Arts. Prices are reasonable, and these artists sometimes find creative ways of exchanging goods for services.

Susan Daley & Steve Gross are photographic based artists who live in New York City. They are the authors of 12 books & have had numerous gallery exhibitions, including the OK Harris Gallery of Soho. Their work examines historically architecture and landscape design, as well as the vernacular buildings found throughout America. In 2020, the Fenimore Art Museum of Cooperstown will exhibit a series of their photos entitled “Blue Gardens.”

“By starkly juxtaposing the forces of neglect and the airy ghosts of weather, these arresting

photographs add a new tension to our ancient fascinations with history, time, nature, and decay.”

--Billy Collins

Print maker, Mary Louise Kalin shows her work; another chance to bring home an original work. Bring your checkbook and check them out.

Since graduating with a B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design, Kalin has worked as a graphic designer and gallery director while maintaining a printmaking studio in New Hampshire from 1982-1990, and from 1998 through the present in Tivoli, NY. Her prints are in numerous corporate and private collections. She is a current member of Longyear Gallery in Margaretville, NY.

When talking about her art practice, she says, "Making art has everything to do with growing up in the Catskill Mountains and on Cape Cod. I was an outside child. We walked miles up through cow pastures, made rooms in the woods, and castles and drawings in the sand in the summer. The layers, the patterns and colors of my natural surroundings are the source for my art. My reverence for nature and the environment is embedded in my images.”

Solo Cello with Marika Hughes

Tickets Available at Door

marika.nyc.401.jpg

“Much of the new album’s brilliance radiates not only from Hughes’ glowing cello playing, singing, and songwriting, but also the smoldering heat from Bottom Heavy, the band she’s been fronting for four years..” – JOHN MURPH, DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE

“Marika Hughes makes a joyful noise at the intersection of classical, jazz and experimental avenues on her solo outing . . . In her hands the sound melts with the warm tones and disciplined approach . . . her varied arsenal of sound, textures and approach is on display here, as is her voice . . . she croons an infectious blues” – Mark Corroto, All About Jazz
